Saw your unit at Mississinewa this past weekend. My unit from Baltimore did not attend, so I fell in with the 19th U.S. Inf Saturday afternoon. Your unit's attention to drill shows to good effect on the field.

Before I became a re-enactor, I used to go see the Battle of North Point re-enactments here in Baltimore. (Think I have a picture of someone from 1993 who looks like Steve A.?)

The 1812 Unit I joined this summer is the 5th MD who used to host the old North Point event. We participated at Ft. McHenry's Star-Spangled Banner/Defenders Day Weekend last month. Not much shooting but a lot of ceremonials, parades and such. A spectacular show Saturday night with simulated bombing/rocketing of the Fort. It's a long way for you fellows, but something to consider for the future.

You have a great web site, very well presented and informative. Probably the best re-enactment group site I have seen. Huzzah!

Interesting website indeed. Thanks for the connection to the UMB site! Hopefully we will have an improved site in the near future. Hope that Christopher R. Fischer, late of the 5th USI, passed his journey back to down to Texas without any adverse incident. His late comrades of the 5th desire to hear from him soon. Next action for the UMB will be a Winter Muster on Feb. 5-6 at Pine City, Minnesota, at the Northwest Fur Co. Post. Join us cold weather training in the snow and ice of the British Upper Mississippi. NWCo. is hosting a first ever War of 1812 event on May 8-9 complete with artillery, a general encampment, &c. At least 10 Canadians are already enrolled, and UMB affiliated units are invited too. Contact Site Manager Patrick Schifferdecker at patrick.schifferdecker@mnhs.org for more info. See ya down the campaign trail...

I love this site.

I think that there is nothing quite like waking up and seeing the 19th century instead of the 20th. The closest war to where I am is 1812 (in Canada), and I participated in my first and so far only, event last spring.

Unfortunately, as a (radio broadcasting and communication) college student, I cannot afford to participate in actual "battles" yet, but thanks to the museum that I voluteer at I can wear civilian clothing, on the sidelines for the time being.

I look foreward to returning to this site later, and oviously long to get involved.

PS. I like the old american flag better than the modern ones, can ones with 13 stars on them be bought anywhere?

My husband's gg-grandfather, George Washington Redmond, served in the 8th Regiment - which later became the 7th. Joining up in August 1812 for 5 years and discharged in 1817 at Camp Montgomery, Alabama Territory. He served under Captains Farrar, Cunningham, Montgomery and Crawford. He was wounded in 1813 but returned to service to complete his term of service. I am anxiously trying to find where this Regiment originated and the places of encampment through those 5 years. George was born in Sumter County, SC, ca. 1795. While still assigned to the 8th he served under Col. Manning. Can anyone help? Many thanks in advance. Jean Redmond

My 3rd great-grandfather was Sergt. Peter B. Conger (7th US Infantry). He joined the 6th as a Sergt. at Morristown, NJ on 17 Nov. 1807. On the breakup of the 6th in 1809 Conger joined Capt. Blue's Co. at New Orleans. He later served with Capt. Montgomery when Blue was promoted to Major. On the morning of 08 January 1815 Sergt. Conger was wounded when a British rocket struck a powder magazine. I would like to make contact with someone who could tell me about the uniform of a 7th Infantry Sergt. from 1807 to 1815. Also anybody with a history of the Company of Captains Blue and Montgomery. Sergt. Conger's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Blue and I have always been curious if Capt. Uriah Blue was kin. Thank you, Brandt Zätterberg

I enjoyed your website very much. I had no idea that there was a reanactment group dedicated to preserving the history of the 7th Infantry. I found it to be most interesting. I was assigned to the 7th as a replacement 2nd Lt.in 2/44 on the Anzio Beachhead. After 6 campaigns and 8 months of occupation duty in Germany, I came home and reverted to the Reserve with the rank of Captain. Russ Cloer

I desc. Capt. Gilbert Christian Russell, Sr., 7th U.S. Infantry, 1808. Col. Russell, 3rd U.S. Infantry (today's 1st) was War of 1812 defender of Mobile for whom Russell Co., Ala., is named. He executed the six Tenn. Tenn. militiamen for his friend, Gen. Jackson. As a civilian brick contractor he built still-stand Fort Morgan, Mobilehrbor, under his kinsman, Maj. Cornelius Augustus Ogden; both men are buried Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile. West Point archives still has two letters from Col. Russell asking that his wife, Mrs. Margaret Hollinger Russell's step-mother's brother, David Moniac be admtted to West Point. Lt. David Moniac, 6th U.S. Infantry, Class of 1822, was West Point's first Native-American graduate and Alabama's first graduate. We got a copy of the video of Alamo 162 from Alamo Village. It was very enjoyable. James took it to school and is trying to get the teacher to show it. He enjoys all things related to the Alamo. I've been researching Pre-WWI soldiers I find buried in Southeastern New Mexico and found what I believe to be only person buried in this area that was born in the 1700's.

I am hoping to find that he fought in the War of 1812 or the Indian Wars.

He was George Laman, born 12/16/1795 died 4/14/1892.

If anyone has seen him on a roster, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

I've enjoyed my tour of your site. I'm very impressed with your authenticity and attention to detail. I manage a small historic house site and am trying to build a Civil War Living History event, so was particularly interested in your portrayals and primary research. If you have words of wisdom, I would welcome any recommendations. Colonel Jones, for whom this site was named and commemorates, was a fan of Winfield Scott, having named his fifth and last son for Scott. Jones, at age fifty-nine or sixty, was commissioned Lt Colonel of the Indiana 53rd Volunteer Infantry at the outset of the Civil War and served until his death in the Atlanta Campaign, July 1864. I would be interested to know if any of your members portray or belong to Civil War units and if there might be an interest in attending our event, which is September 25 & 26 this year, and will be Sept 23 and 24, 2000. And would Mr O'Doole feel his Emporium would be appropriate at a Civil War encampment in Indiana? Thanks for the tour! I await your response. Sincerely, Peggy Brooks

James Marlin was a relative that was in the Mexican War. He is said to have died in Puebla, Mexico. It is also told in our family that his parents were sent a medal for his actions in the war. Do you have any information or know of rosters, ect?

In addition to the short comment I just made, do you know of any MW units in my part of the world of Nw Nevada, ie, northern California, Bay Area, or Utah? Of interest, as an outdoor recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management here, I had the priviledge this year of scouting out the California National Historic Trail ('49ers trail) which crosses our district for 120 miles. This was in preparation for the crossing by Gold Rush sesquicentennial wagon trains. The NHT also branches into another 150-mile trail, the Applegate-Lassen NHT, which I've also been able to travel. When the gold rush wagon train came through (only 4 wagons, drat) it was a great thrill to put on my mix-match outfit (some MW clothing and equipage, and civilian), climb aboard and portray a Fort Scott, Kansas, deserter for about 50 nice, very dusty miles. Never had to worry about arrest as no federal troops were ever encountered.

Enjoyed this webb page. Especially the notes reZ: the Compy Laundress. I am working on an manuscript pertaining to Sem. Wars in Fla. I mention that a small numbe of women are at the fort operating the Company Laundress--I shared this w/ a few other researches & they claim to have never heard of a "Company Laundress." Yet, there I found it in the Records at National archives. Also, to compound my findings, I wish your permission to quote in my work some of the notes on the Company Laundress from your Webb Page. Please respond to this per my email.

Also, I am debating whether the 7th Infy ever served on the Caloosahatchee River in Florida between late-1838 and 1841. I have the regimental returns and they are at most, very sketchy.

Capt. B.L.E. Boneville was ordered to the Calosahatchee but I believe the order was rescinded & he was directed to Middle Fla. instead due to a recent outbreak of hostilities there. Yet, a published source states he was on the Caloosahatchee River at that time. I disagree, but was hoping that one of your researchers can compound this with other research data. I have researched most leads--Regimental Returns, Post Returns, ect.,. but have not read the B-1839 thru B-1841 Military Letters available on Microfilm in Record Group 94 at Natl. Archives [These contain the Bonneville correspondences].

Good tidings, & etc. Please allow me to compliment you on your excellent web site. I am am American civil war re-enactor with the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. "K". I was just browsing other reenacting sites. My great grandfather was a Texas Ranger from Franklin St. in Paris, Tx. His name was William Phillips. His wife was Sarah King. I was told that he was a soldier in the civil war, and his relatives were at the Alamo, but I have never researched. Best personal regards to you.

I am very impressed by your web site. I have been a Civil War re-enactor for about 11 years. I also hold a B.S. in History and find the early period of our country the most interesting. Some of the members of my unit, 24th Tenn., have been branching out to other areas. We have seriosly talked about the Mexican War since it has such a close connection. If there is any information that you might could share with us I would be greatly appreciative. Again, your web site is outstanding!

Do you have a specific sutler or vendor you get your uniforms from; specifically your headgear? Does your organization ever do anything around the DFW area? I'm a civil war reenactor with the 9th Texas in DFW and have always been curious if there were many reenactors in Texas that portrayed earlier wars. (ie Texas Rev. or Mexican War) You have a very interesting website and I enjoyed looking at your phot gallery.

Thank you!

I was interested in this site to find out about my great, great, great grandfather who fought in the war of 1812 in Louisiana. I have a xerox paper showing his service as James Dyer. I believe there were two soldiers of the same name. He was born in 1795 or 1801. I did find his gravesite in the HEATH cemetery in HURON. A small community in TEXAS southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. This site at least gives me a feel for the era in which he lived and fought. Any information you can provide would be helpful.
